1.8 billion people have still never heard the name of Jesus. 2,000 languages do not have a Bible translation.
American Christians earn about 12.3 TRILLION dollars a year. Only about 1.7% of our income goes to evangelism to unreached people around the world. We spend more money, time and effort on ourselves and our programs and our comfort than we do on basic evangelism and outreach, telling people about our Savior.
If you're like me, you might not know these stats. For awhile I thought that, surely by now, most people around the world have heard of Jesus. There are computers, radios or cell phones in most countries right?
1.8 billion people. What do we, as North American Christians, do about this?
I'm not sure yet. All I know is that God is calling us to go and make disciples. Yes we can do that in America; there is a lot missing in the American church about evangelism and true discipleship of believers here. But isn't it sad that there are over 20 English translations of the Bible, and 2,000 languages have still never seen the Word of God?
"And behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, 'Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!'"
Rev. 7:9-10
In the midst of economic turmoil and war, our generation has seen so much death in ways unlike any other generation. Depression, abortions, all kinds of drugs, video games and movies that praise killing, destruction of the environment - our generation is crying out for authenticity and truth. There is so much hope for a generation to humbly and truthfully follow Christ, and to love all peoples and all cultures around us with no judgment. I pray that our generation has the courage to obey the call to radically love this hurting world, and to love people the way Jesus does, by the power of his Spirit alone.
Go. God is calling us to go, make disciples, that every knee should bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
